TRUEMOTION FAMILY (FREE) ,
An app that’s great for competitive families, TrueMotion Family tracks driver behavior, then scores and ranks each user based on the number of distracted driving infractions. The highest-ranked driver earns cash and prizes. The app can differentiate between drivers and passengers, and recognizes if you’ve been talking, texting, calling or playing games. It also offers real-time location tracking.
MOJO (FREE) ANDROID,
Mojo also uses gamification to motivate drivers to improve their behavior behind the wheel. Users invite friends to download the app and compete to be the safest driver. Good behavior is rewarded with a chance to win gift cards. It gauges distraction by how often a user swipes or talks on the phone while driving.
WIRELESS COMPANY APPS
All major cellphone companies have their own distracted driving apps:
AT&T DRIVEMODE®, , iOS
Drivers can adjust their settings so this feature automatically turns on when they exceed 25 miles per hour. During setup, users can select five contacts that may call or text while the vehicle is in motion. The driver may only communicate with the designated individuals, use navigation or play music while behind the wheel.
SPRINT DRIVE FIRST
The app automatically turns on and locks the driver’s phone when a vehicle reaches 10 mph. Similar to AT&T DriveMode, drivers can select five contacts and access to three apps — including texting. In hands-free mode, the driver may contact anyone. Parental controls notify the account manager if a child has disconnected the app. This app must be purchased through the driver’s cellphone plan.
VERIZON DRIVING MODE,
Verizon includes Driving Mode in the settings feature of its Android phones. Using Bluetooth, Driving Mode mutes incoming calls and text messages. The driver can also set up custom automatic replies to incoming correspondence. The app will automatically turn on when connected to the vehicle’s Bluetooth system.
SAFEDRIVE FOR TEEN DRIVERS (FREE)
SafeDrive encourages friendly competition by letting users compete against others worldwide. Drivers earn points for good driving behavior. These points translate to significant discounts on popular products such as technology, movies and apparel.
DRIVESAFE.LY® ($3.99-$9.99/MONTH)
DriveSafe.ly is a unique distracted driving app. It reads aloud incoming text messages and emails, including shorthand, as they come in. It’s both Bluetooth and car-radio compatible. While it doesn’t have any blocking capabilities, it will deter drivers from looking at their phones.
ON MY WAY — OMW (FREE)
OMW is great for users who are constantly travelling to meet others. The app lets drivers create a link and share it with their friends/ families, who can then track their real-time location. Even though this app doesn’t block texts or calls, it may reduce how many are received when a user is behind the wheel.
LIFESAVER (FREE, EXTRA COST FOR UPGRADED VERSION)
91黑料网 has partnered with LifeSaver to offer this app to policyholders at a discounted rate. The app utilizes GPS monitoring and a reward system to discourage distracted driving. LifeSaver detects when a vehicle is moving and locks the driver’s cellphone — blocking texts, calls and more. There’s also a Driver Portal that allows parents to monitor teen drivers and offer rewards for safe driving.
