Over the past 50 years, there has been a sharp decline in the recognition and education of skilled trades. Now, as Baby Boomers begin to retire from the construction, manufacturing and engineering fields, 31 million positions will be open to vocational workers in the next two years. The problem? Skilled trades have been deemphasized for so long that younger generations do not consider this career path.

Even now, 62 percent of firms are struggling to fill vocational positions. According to a recent report from Adecco, the most in-demand positions are:

  • Construction and extraction occupations
  • Electricians
  • Pipelayers, plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters
  • Machinists
  • Industrial machinery mechanics
  • Civil engineers
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Industrial engineers
  • Electrical engineers

These radical numbers have promoted a resurgence of the skilled trades in both secondary and higher education institutions. High schools now offer technical training classes and promote skilled trades during post-graduation advising sessions. Moreover, colleges and universities offer vocational programs — or partnerships with skilled trades associations that coincide with other degree programs.

Is a career in the skilled trades right for you?
Skilled trades are an excellent way to work in the creative and technical fields simultaneously. Workers can also take advantage of a collaborative work environment, opportunities for upward mobility, and flexible working hours or conditions. According to hiring managers, the best skilled trade employees are:

  • Dependable
  • Insightful
  • Business literate
  • Strong communicators
  • Up-to-date on trends and technology
  • Customer-focused
